Climbing the Wall of Awful

Or taking a bite out of what I like to call Wawful to make it sound more appealing than it is.

It's a phrase I've borrowed from my eldest sister to describe those pesky tasks that you know you should do and, in some cases, aren't even that difficult, but they can be tedious or time consuming or minor enough that it's easier to push them off to the next day until weeks or months go by while they just sit there on your to-do list collecting dust. Heck, even hobbies or activities that you enjoy can fall into this category! For example, I'd been meaning to make a character for a friend's game for weeks now, but I just kept putting it off because it wasn't as much a priority compared to, y'know, catching up on my writing.

What I like about how my cork board is set up now is that the tasks I've pinned to it are always visible, and the act of moving one task from the To-Do section to the Doing section compels me to go complete it, even if I moan and groan about how much I don't want to, which makes it easier to tackle that Wawful. Having a specific set of triggers such as the above or a series of "if-then" statements can help with holding yourself accountable and keeping yourself on track with what needs to get done. (If my fiancé leaves for work after lunch, then I will go on a short walk to warm myself up for my daily workout routine.)

As such, instead of my usual routine this week, I finally made said character along with ticking off a number of Wawful tasks, since I had less time than usual in the day to soak in my more involved projects:

  • Made a list of snacks for a care package exchange with a friend of mine in Japan

  • Researched places where we could recycle batteries, since that's a frustratingly limited service here

  • Made Mura's annual vet appointment

  • Cleaned & organized the bar counter of all the clutter

  • Deep cleaned the shower & curtain

  • Etc. etc...

Starting tomorrow it's back to the grind. I have a 4-hour session from Wednesday to transcribe before Monday and a journal to attempt to write before then as well. I'll let you know how it goes.

In the meantime, I'm curious to know what errands, chores, and more have made it to your Wawful list. Is it getting started on a personal project or continuing to learn the necessary skills for one? Making a doctor's appointment? Homework? It doesn't matter if you answer today or 324 years in the future, my interest is piqued.

I wonder if chores will be the same 324 years in the future....
