The Challenge with Moving Goalposts and an Immovable Deadline

So, at the end of November, the other member of our Pathfinder game had to take a step back until the new year for personal reasons. Totally understandable, life takes precedence. Through some agreements, my fiancé and I decided to continue playing, since there was plenty for Cael to do during our player's absence.

So, the Sunday of the 24th my fiancé and I played as normal. As a result, two more journals were added onto my pile, the 14th and 15th of Nudon respectively, bringing my total journal count back up to 10. Thankfully, I got both written along with editing and posting the 6th of Nudon, dropping me to 9 journals remaining before this past Monday's session 97.

I think you can see where this is going, but let me twist the knife a little.

We're doing our session 98 tomorrow. Yup. Tomorrow. Three days after 97. Which is great! It's how we handled Shipton downtime, sacrificing length for frequency in between our weekly scheduled sessions with the group. The only problem is, after session 97, I'm back up to 10 journals.

Now, this may sound like I'm complaining, but really as I sit here typing up this post, I'm grinning at the ridiculousness of the situation in which I've placed myself, because I knew going into December that catching up on the journals by themselves was going to be an ambitious task. Increasing the frequency as we have, well, that presents its own unique set of challenges.

If I want to ensure that I have all of my journals edited and posted on our shared server by midnight of the 31st, something needs to give, especially if I want to continue with transcribing each session before the next, writing correspondence between Cael and others so I don't fall behind on that as well, making Christmas presents for family, working out consistently, blogging every Wednesday, and so on.

Just taking a look at yesterday, I woke up at 5:00 and worked until 19:00, taking a few hours for food and chores. Session 97 was nearly 4 hours on the dot, so it took between 7-8 hours to transcribe, and this time there was no combat, which I usually skip, thus shortening session length. I also wrote messages from Cael to various people, roughly 1300 words in a couple of hours.

There's a reason last week's blog title included the word "sprint" in it.

With a bit of luck, since I wrote the 16th of Nudon today, tomorrow I'll be able to edit and post the 7th, since my fiancé works, but December is shaping up to be a busy month indeed.

Other Notable Accomplishments:

  • Finally went to the local library to get a library card. Been meaning to do so forever and just haven't, since it's not a huge priority.

  • Been trying out the new BWS+ app that Jeremy released on the 29th, and I've gotta say, I've really been enjoying it thus far. The quality of life improvements over just buying one of the programs has been wonderful, though like others, I wish there was a one-time purchase option.

Questions for Contemplation & Discussion:

  • Have you ever come across moving goalposts with an immovable deadline? If so, how did you handle the challenge? If you were go back and attempt it again, how would you change your approach?
